Jacob Powalinsky

Hello, my name is Jacob Powalinsky and I’ll be a counselor at Green Grove this year! I have been a camper at camp for several years, and last year I was a volunteer counselor. I can’t wait to get to know the campers this year and have a blast!

Here are a few things about me, to get to know me better!

My favorite Ukrainian thing to do is Ukrainian dance. I’ve been dancing for 11 years, and have loved every second of it. I currently dance with a group in Saskatoon called Boyan, but in the future, I hope to dance with a semi-professional group called Pavelchenko Folkloric Ensemble.

My favorite thing to do as a camper when I went to camp was to sit in my cabin with the rest of the boys and play cards for as long as we could. That’s where I met and got to know the people in my cabin, some of whom I’m still good friends with today.

I have played trumpet for around 6 years, since grade 6, with a little break during Covid when I had no access to any teachers or a trumpet. I’ll admit, I’m not very good, but I enjoy playing it. I picked it back up for high school and I am going into my senior year of high school playing trumpet in my school’s senior band.

The most challenging thing I’ve done, or at least that I can remember, is a no-handed cartwheel or an aerial. It took me quite a while to be able to successfully do one because I was scared to hurt myself. But I took small steps to improve, and then I got comfortable with them, and it’s now something fun I can do for Ukrainian dance!

I’m most looking forward to meeting all the campers this year and being able to make a good, lasting impression on them. I can’t wait to connect and make hopefully life-long memories with all the amazing young people attending camp!
